Baldwin’s girls wrestling team took home a state title during Friday’s Class 4A-1A state wrestling tournament at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

The Bulldogs had four wrestlers place to score 54.5 points as a team, which was good enough to secure a state crown at just the second official girls wrestling state tournament. It came after Baldwin didn’t have either of its two qualifiers find the podium during last year’s state tourney.

Sophomore Audrey Darnell (29-7) took third in the 138-pound weight class for Baldwin, while sophomore Madi Hargett (21-13) did the same in the 235-pound weight class.

Senior Emma Grossoehme, who qualified for state last season, finished fourth in the 143-pound weight class this time around. Haleigh Wempe placed fifth in the 170-pound bracket to conclude her freshman campaign.

In the same meet, Tonganoxie’s Holly Colvert secured a runner-up finish in the 191-pound weight class. It was a nice jump for Colvert, who finished fourth at the state tourney as a freshman last season.

On the boys side, Eudora senior Cael Lynch secured an individual title to highlight a strong showing by area wrestlers. Lynch won the 138-pound bracket at the Class 4A state wrestling meet on Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

Lynch earned a 8-4 decision over Chanute’s Colton Seely in the championship match. He won his other two matches by decision as well, defeating Trent Moses of Mulvane in the quarterfinals and Colby’s Tyler Voss in the semifinals.

Lynch closed out his senior season with a 32-4 overall record. Also for Eudora, senior Holden Andrews finished fifth in the 145-pound weight class at the state tourney.

At the same event, Tonganoxie had a pair of wrestlers secure runner-up finishes and three more athletes take third. Junior Gabriel Bailey (152) and senior Branden Martin (195) both lost in the finals of their respective weight class to place second.

Freshman Braeden Moore (113), junior Grayson Sonntag (126) and senior Derek Duffett (145) all won their respective third-place matches to take third for Tonganoxie. The Chieftains placed third as a team, while Andale won the Class 4A state title.

Baldwin senior Toby Thomas finished out his career by placing fifth in the 220-pound weight class.

Perry-Lecompton senior Thad Metcalfe tallied third place in the 160-pound bracket, while fellow senior Hayden Robb registered fifth in the 285-pound weight class for PLHS.
