Free State junior Madyson Gray stands atop the podium after winning her second official state wrestling title on Thursday inside Hartman Arena on Feb. 25, 2021. Gray is the first back-to-back state wrestling champion in school history.

For the first time in school history, Free State has a two-time state champion in wrestling.

Junior Madyson Gray accomplished that feat on Thursday inside Hartman Arena by winning an individual title at just the state’s

second sanctioned girls wrestling tournament. Gray also won an unofficial girls wrestling title as a freshman, meaning she’s really a three-time champion in the sport.

En route to her latest title, Gray won all three of her matches by pin in the 132-pound bracket on Thursday. She pinned Wichita North freshman Jaycee Tyler in the first round, and then won via fall against Olathe West senior Elle Fishburn in the semifinals.

In the championship bout, Gray wrapped things up by pinning Garden City senior Anjelina Serrano.

Gray went 17-0 against female wrestlers during her junior campaign, in which all 17 victories came via pin. That level of dominance was a testament to the “no mercy” mindset she embraced this season.

For her career, Gray is 61-0 against girl wrestlers at the high school level. She went 34-0 during a girls-only schedule as sophomore on her way to winning a state title at the first official state tournament in girls wrestling.
