Lawrence High’s girls basketball team was overwhelmed by Shawnee Mission South in a 55-24 road loss on Tuesday.

The Lions (2-17, 1-12 Sunflower League) surrendered 20 points in the opening period and were then held to a single point in the second quarter. They played better in the third period, but the game had been decided by halftime when the Raiders (12-6, 8-5 Sunflower League) raced out to a 36-10 advantage.

“We ran into a buzzsaw tonight with a really good, hard-nosed (and) well-coached team that was hitting on cylinders,” LHS head coach Jeff Dickson said. “We lost a little of our spirit in the second quarter.”

A total of 10 players scored for the Lions in the loss, as many players got involved in this game. Nobody scored more than 3 points, but several players contributed to a 10-point effort by Lawrence in the third period.

“It hurts to see our kids work so hard every day and do things the right way and not get that payoff in winning games,” Dickson said. “I see the massive strides these kids are making.”

“I know it is going to pay off for them, and I believe completely in this group,” Dickson added.

Lawrence will travel to Blue Valley West at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for the regular-season finale.
