Free State junior Madyson Gray after winning the 132-pound weight class at Saturday's regional meet at Emporia High School on Feb. 13, 2021. Gray was named wrestler of the year for her region after her winning a regional title.

Free State’s Madyson Gray dominated Saturday’s regional meet in Emporia on her way to adding more hardware to her already impressive collection.

Gray, a junior, pinned both of her opponents in the 132-pound weight class after receiving a bye to win her bracket. Not only did she qualify for substate, but Gray was named the wrestler of the year at her regional meet for her performance.

In the semifinals, Gray pinned Caitlin Bolton of Emporia to advance to the finals. She followed that up with another pin in the title match, topping Shawnee Heights wrestler Haley Haltom.

Gray improved to 11-0 in girls wrestling, while also posting a 7-4 clip against male wrestlers this year. Gray, who won a state title at the first official girls state wrestling tourney a year ago, is now one step closer to repeating this winter.

Free State’s Clare Benton finished in fifth place in the 126-pound weight class. She earned a pin against Molly Dunnington of Basehor-Linwood in the fifth-place match.

The substate meet that FSHS is slated to compete in will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Leavenworth.
