Lawrence High had not one but two individuals earn regional titles during Friday’s Class 6A regional meet at Olathe East.

Junior Kevin Honas, who is ranked No. 3 in the 120-pound weight class in Class 6A, took care of business in his bracket. After pinning two opponents to advance to the finals, Honas then earned a 6-2 decision over Olathe North freshman Jacob Vasquez (No. 6 in Class 6A) in the championship match of the 120-pound weight class.

Lawrence senior Trey Medina followed that up with a regional title of his own in the 145-pound weight class. Medina (No. 2 in Class 6A) recorded a 7-5 win over Johnny Cash Thomas of Olathe South in the championship match. It came after Medina notched back-to-back pins to get to the finals.

Medina, who is now 15-0 on the year, was named wrestler of the year for his regional following his stellar showing in the first postseason meet.

Sophomore Jack Elsten (No. 3 in Class 6A) made it to the championship match of the 113-pound weight class before ultimately falling in the finals to finish as a runner-up. Elsten was pinned in the finals by the No. 2-ranked wrestler in his weight class — Olathe North sophomore Cael Alderman.

The Lions ended up having six wrestlers advance to the sub-state meet, which will be held next week. Only the top-four wrestlers in each weight class were allowed to move on.

Senior Logan Farrell (132-pound weight class) and sophomore Tucker Corbin (182-pound weight class) both made it through the consolation side of their bracket all the way to the third-place match. Farrell won his third-place match, while Corbin dropped his bout to finish fourth.

LHS freshman Andrew Honas lost by injury default in the third-place match of the 106-pound weight class, meaning he finished fourth as an individual.

As a team, the Lions finished fifth with a score of 131.5 points. Olathe North (No. 3 in Class 6A) won the regional title by posting a team score of 205.

Free State’s wrestling program, meanwhile, will be sending 12 male wrestlers to sub-state after an impressive showing in what was considered a tough regional meet at Wichita Southeast on Friday.

Despite being in an event that featured over 30 ranked wrestlers — along with three other top-10 teams — the Firebirds (No. 5 in Class 6A) had five different athletes make it to the championship match of their respective weight class. None of them came home with a regional title, but plenty of individuals secured some significant hardware in the end.

Sophomore Eric Streeter (113-pound weight class), junior Darius Shields (120-pound weight class), senior Caleb Streeter (138-pound weight class), freshman Laython Biddle (160-pound weight class) and sophomore Matthew Marcum (170-pound weight class) all fell in the finals of their bracket to finish as runner-ups.

FSHS also had four different wrestlers win the third-place match of their respective weight groups. Sophomore Nolan Bradley (106), senior Austin Burenheide (182), senior Alex Allison (195) and junior Tai Newhouse (285) all netted bronze for the Firebirds.

In addition, junior Ezra Birdahsaw (126), freshman D’onte Goodman (132) and senior Cole Rorick (220) all finished fourth in their respective weight class to qualify for sub-state next week. Juniors Ben Mellenbruch and Zach Shepley placed fifth in the 145-pound weight class and 152-pound weight class, respectively.

The Firebirds took third as a team with a total of 188 points. Washburn Rural (No. 1 in Class 6A) won the regional crown as a team with a total score of 251.5.

FSHS will compete in its sub-state meet at Wichita Heights on Saturday, Feb. 20. Lawrence’s sub-state event will be the same day, though it will take place at Olathe North. Similar to regionals, only the top-four wrestlers of each weight class at sub-state will get to advance to state.
