Lawrence High’s girls basketball team was overwhelmed by Shawnee Mission Northwest (No. 2 in Class 6A) in a 55-21 road loss Friday night.

The Lions (2-11) surrendered 21 points to the Cougars (11-0) in the opening period. Shawnee Mission Northwest then added 18 points in the second quarter to take a 39-9 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Amaya Marshall and Layla Harjo led the way offensively for LHS in the loss. They each finished with 5 points. Lawrence never scored more than 7 points in a quarter against Shawnee Mission Northwest, which has a rare blend of athleticism and length on its roster.

“The score might say otherwise, but we got better,” LHS head coach Jeff Dickson said. “We played one of the best coached, classiest programs in the state and we learned a lot by watching them and competing against them.”

Lawrence will host Shawnee Mission East at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
