In a big-time battle between two premier Sunflower League teams, Free State’s boys basketball team earned bragging rights with a 60-50 victory over Olathe South Friday night at FSHS.

Both teams were ranked in the top-10 via the latest poll by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association entering the matchup. The Firebirds (12-2) are ranked No. 5 in Class 6A, while the Falcons (9-4) are listed at No. 6 in Class 6A.

Olathe South grabbed a 16-15 advantage after the first period, but Free State took control after that. FSHS scored 20 points in the second period, sparked by a trio of 3-pointers from junior Cooper Jackson.

Jackson ended up pouring in a team-high 22 points for the Firebirds in the win. He knocked down five triples on the night. Junior Mozae Downing and senior Andrew Piper also ended up in double figures with 10 points apiece.

Free State posted double-digit offensive outputs in each of the four quarters on its way to a 10-point victory. It was a good way to honor seniors Kris Daniels, Justin Hicks, Cole Wheeler and Piper on senior night.

Free State will travel to Olathe West at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
