In a battle between two top-six teams, Lawrence High’s boys basketball team had the last laugh by earning a hard-fought 47-41 home win over Olathe South on Tuesday.

The Lions outscored the Falcons, 27-20, in the second half and that proved to be the difference in a slugfest. LHS, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, improved to 11-1 on the year with the win. Olathe South, the No. 6 in team Class 6A, fell to 9-3 on the season.

“Great fight tonight by both teams,” LHS head coach Mike Lewis said. “Two good Sunflower League teams going punch for punch.”

Senior guard Zeke Mayo led the way for LHS on offense by scoring 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Avion Nelson produced 8 points off the bench, while Truman Juelsgaard came through with 7 points.

LHS will host Shawnee Mission Northwest (No. 9 in Class 6A) at 7 p.m. Friday.
