Preps notebook: Free State freshman Jack Randall wins golf tournament as individual

Free State freshman Jack Randall earned his first individual victory during the first leg of the Sunflower League Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Deer Creek Golf Course.

Free State freshman Jack Randall claimed his first win of his high school career Tuesday afternoon during the first leg of the Sunflower League Invitational.

Randall shot a 71 to finish one stroke under par at the Deer Creek Golf Course. His score was one stroke better than Mill Valley senior Nick Mason. Randall’s high finish helped the Firebirds place fifth as a team with a total score of 333.

During his first win, Randall was at his best on the back nine. After shooting 38 on the front nine, Randall posted a 33 on the final nine holes. The performance was nine strokes better than his previous season-best round of 80 during the Washburn Rural Invitational on April 8.

So far this season, Randall has averaged a score of 75.5 to lead the way for the Firebirds. Senior Reece Gray was the next-highest finisher on Tuesday, finishing with a round of 85 to place 24th as an individual.

Lawrence High was also led by a freshman, as Gunnar Wayenberg shot 88 to claim 32nd as an individual. The Lions placed 12th as a team, while Olathe West won the team title with a total score of 314.

LHS will be back in action on Thursday at Shiloh Springs Golf Course, while FSHS will compete in a tournament at Sunflower Hills Golf Course on Monday.

FSHS softball defeats SM South in four innings

Free State’s softball needed just four innings to record a 15-0 win over Shawnee Mission South on Tuesday.

The Firebirds had two big innings, scoring four runs in the second and seven in the third. They added three more runs in the fourth to end the game early. FSHS recorded 14 hits as a team, improving to 6-0 on the year.

Junior Jasmine Brixius continues to have a strong season at the plate, as she recorded a pair of triples while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Senior Anna McIntire also registered a RBI triple.

Sophomore Leah Mueller and senior Georgia Rea each tallied a double in the win. Mueller, Rea and Brixius were the lone players to finish with multi-hit efforts.

Freshman Kinsey Clopton got the start for the Firebirds, and pitched a perfect game in her first varsity start. Clopton struck out eight batters across four innings, throwing a strike on 36 of her 54 total pitches.

LHS softball falls at Olathe Northwest

Lawrence High’s softball team surrendered most of its damage late in a 13-5 road loss to Olathe Northwest Tuesday night.

The Lions (2-5, 2-3 Sunflower League), who played one of their better defensive games of the year, had two outs in the seventh with bases loaded before giving up six runs to the opposition. It came after Olathe Northwest scored three runs in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth.

Emme Dye and Sydney Delfelder both had two hits and two runs scored. Layla Harjo, Hailey Ramirez, Laci Thompson and Maelee Folks all had one hit apiece.

Lawrence will travel to Olathe South at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

FSHS girls soccer drops 2-1 decision

Free State’s girls soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Shawnee Mission Northwest Tuesday night.

It was a well-played match by both teams, with Free State’s lone goal coming late in the second half. Sophomore Ella McCleary was responsible for the only score recorded by the Firebirds, who fell to 1-2 on the year.

Free State will host Olathe East at 7 p.m. Thursday.

LHS girls swim wins meet; FSHS places second

The leaderboard at Free State’s swim and dive meet on Tuesday was filled with local athletes.

All but one of the 12 events was won by an athlete from either Lawrence High or Free State. LHS claimed eight of those victories on its way to winning the quadrangular with a total score of 435. FSHS finished in second place with a total score of 398.

Lawrence won all three relays during Tuesday’s meet. Iris Sherron, Madi Heckman, Carmen Braden and Aubrey Fischer clocked a time of 1:58.35 to win the 200-yard medley relay. Braden, Lillian Derby, Ali Jones and Heckman posted a time of 1:46.05 to win the 200 freestyle relay.

To end the meet, Braden, Derby, Jones and Fischer won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:54.87.

Heckman was victorious in two individual events, winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.71 and the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:12.41. Braden won the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.73, while Jones placed first in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 2:08.87.

Lawrence’s Emily Brandt won the diving competition with a total score of 216.95.

Free State won a trio of individual events, two of which were captured by Lolly Hindmann. She won the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.54, and placed first in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 1:02.93. Molly Nuckolls posted a time of 5:40.17 to win the 500 freestyle.
