Preps notebook: Strong finish by FSHS softball leads to 13-6 road win over Olathe West

Free State’s softball team took control down the stretch in its 13-6 road victory over Olathe West Saturday afternoon.

With the score tied at 4-4 through four innings, the Firebirds (5-0) grabbed the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth. They then added four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away.

Offensively, Free State was led by a four-hit performance from Tatum Clopton. She went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and one home run.

Two other players homered for the Firebirds: Kinsey Clopton’s was a solo shot, and Leah Mueller’s was a two-run blast. Jasmine Brixius drove in three RBIs and recorded a double. Georgia Rea also had a double during her two-hit effort. Sara Roszak went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

On the pitching side, Tatum Clopton got the start and allowed five earned runs on five hits over seven innings. She finished with 15 strikeouts and zero walks but gave up three home runs to the Owls on a windy afternoon.

Next, FSHS will host Shawnee Mission South at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LHS softball falls at Olathe North

Lawrence High’s softball team gave up three big innings in a 13-3 road loss to Olathe North Saturday afternoon at the Olathe District Activity Center.

The Lions (2-4, 2-2 Sunflower League) surrendered five runs in the first, four in the second and four in the fourth. LHS pitcher Maelee Folks gave up nine earned runs on eight hits, and she recorded two strikeouts and four walks.

Hailey Ramirez scored two of the three runs on a blast in the fourth. Ramirez now has two homers so far this year. Emily Silvers finished with a double and a single. Layla Harjo had two hits, and Folks finished with a double and one RBI.

Next, Lawrence will host Olathe Northwest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LHS track athletes earn 7 top-3 finishes

The Lawrence High track and field team earned seven top-three finishes at the Olathe Invitational on Friday, which was the team’s first meet away from Lawrence.

Senior Graham Hough won the boys 100-meter run for the second consecutive meet, finishing with a time of 11.12. Amaya Harris had the only other win of the day, placing first in girls javelin with a throw of 122-11.

Mariah Reed finished as runner-up in girls high jump with a 5-00.00, and Avion Nelson took third in boys triple jump with a leap of 42-08.00. Brenna Schwada had third-place finishes in the girls long jump (17-01.00) and the girls 400-meter run (1:01.61). Hough also took third in the boys 200-meter run, clocking a time of 22.59.

Lawrence placed eighth as a team in the girls division and 10th overall in the boys division.

Next, LHS will host a meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

FSHS distance runner wins multiple events

Also competing for the first time away from Lawrence, Free State’s track and field team won several events at Friday’s meet at William Chrisman High School, including three boys distance running contests.

Ben Shryock was responsible for two of those wins, placing first in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.78 and in the 1,600-meter run with 4:22.72. Jack Keathley-Helms came in second in the 800-meter run with a mark of 1:58.03.

The relay team of Ethan Sharp, Jake Loos, Carson Marsh and Keathley-Helms won the boys 4×800-meter relay with a time of 8:33.17.

Reese Hulcher earned the only other win of the day for FSHS, finishing first in girls high jump. Isabelle Pro placed third in the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:00.36.

FSHS placed seventh out of 16 teams in the boys division and was eighth out of 20 teams in the girls division.

Next, Free State will compete in a meet at LHS at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Area athletes in action at Bobcat Relays

During the 20th annual Bobcat Relays in Basehor-Linwood, both Tonganoxie and Bishop Seabury had a number of track athletes perform well on Friday.

Tonganoxie sprinter Natalee Shepard finished as runner-up in both the girls 100-meter run and girls 200-meter run with times of 13.01 and 26.73, respectively. Emma Sunderland finished in second in girls high jump, and Brianna Pollard placed third in girls triple jump.

For the Bishop Seabury girls, Oona Nelson placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:38.27. Darby Harris, Summer Hartzler, Hannah Motsinger and Nelson also took second in the distance medley relay with a mark of 14:34.00.

On the boys side, Tonganoxie’s Eli Gilmore won both the 1,600-meter run (4:58.84) and the 3,200-meter run (10:40.85) to lead the way. Dallas Bond also won the 110 high hurdles with a mark of 16.04.

In the field events, Blake Poje placed first in the long jump competition for Tonganoxie with a leap of 20-3.75. Keaton Klamm won the pole vault event by clearing 9-0.00.

The Bishop Seabury boys had two seventh-place finishes. Harrison Hartzler took seventh in the 100-meter run with a time of 11.99. And Luke Velte, Lear Eicher, Hayden Slough and Sam Jackson posted a time of 56.65 to take seventh in the 4×100-meter relay.
