For the first time in program history, Perry-Lecompton’s football team will make back-to-back trips to the state title game.

Perry-Lecompton, which finished as the Class 3A runner-up a season ago, secured a 22-9 victory over Holton at PLHS during the semifinals on Friday. The Kaws are now headed to the Class 3A state championship, which is slated to take place in Hutchinson on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Holton (9-2) struck first with a 24-yard field goal at the 7:18 mark in the second quarter, but PLHS (11-1) answered before halftime.

With 2:14 left in the second period, quarterback Thad Metcalfe connected with receiver Parker Stone for a 27-yard touchdown. Metcalfe then linked up with Dawson Williams on the 2-point conversion to help the host grab an 8-3 advantage at the break.

Metcalfe added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second half to create some breathing room. He ran one in from 4 yards out with 5:42 left in the third quarter, while netting a 2-yard score at the 5:57 mark in the fourth period. The Wildcats scored once more before the game was final.

Holton’s only two losses of the season came at the hands of Perry-Lecompton. The Kaws earned a 28-14 win in the regular-season meeting between these two teams in Week 3, despite losing their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury in that game.

Metcalfe, who has been the team’s signal caller ever since then, was 16-of-22 for 186 yards in Perry-Lecompton’s latest win. He also added 117 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Stone, Williams and Reichen Rush all finished with multiple receptions. Stone led the way with eight catches for 109 yards.

Perry-Lecompton will have another rematch in the Class 3A title game. Andale (11-0) blanked Wichita Collegiate in a 49-0 win in the semifinals. Andale won the state title with a 35-7 victory over Perry-Lecompton in the final game last season.

The Indians, who haven’t lost since 2018, have won 24 games in a row entering next weekend.
