Area football roundup: Perry-Lecompton advances to Class 3A semifinals with win over Prairie View

Perry-Lecompton was in front all night of its 49-14 win over Prairie View on Friday to keep the 2020 season alive.

The Kaws are now one win away from a second consecutive trip to the state championship game. Perry-Lecompton (10-1) will play host to Holton (9-1) in the Class 3A semifinals next Friday.

In its sub-state victory, PLHS scored 22 points in the second quarter to pull away from Prairie View. Quarterback Thad Metcalfe scored the first two touchdowns on the night (one rush, one pass) before the Buffaloes (8-2) netted their first score in the second period.

Reichen Rush of Perry-Lecompton proceeded to take the ensuing kickoff to the house for a touchdown to halt any momentum by the visitors. Metcalfe added a 1-yard touchdown run in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter to give the Kaws a 30-6 advantage at the intermission.

Metcalfe and Rush led the way for Perry-Lecompton in the team’s latest win. Metcalfe finished with 153 rushing yards and three scores on 22 carries, while Rush turned 12 rushing attempts into 112 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Through the air, Metcalfe completed 6-of-8 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Payne finished with a team-high three catches for 45 yards. Hunter Hess and Dawson Williams each notched a touchdown grab of 71 yards and 20 yards, respectively.

The semifinal showdown is actually a rematch of a regular-season matchup. Perry-Lecompton secured a 28-14 win at Holton in Week 3 on Sept. 18.

Tonganoxie eliminated by Bishop Miege

Tonganoxie’s stellar football season came to an end with a 30-7 loss to Bishop Miege on Friday.

It marks the second season in a row that THS has suffered a season-ending defeat to Bishop Miege. The Chieftains finished the 2020 campaign with a 9-2 overall record. The Stags (5-4), who have won six state titles in a row, will face St. James Academy in the semifinals.

Tonganoxie surrendered 14 points in the first quarter, and only managed to score once on a touchdown in the second period. Senior running back Tyler Bowden led the way in the loss with 25 carries for 104 yards, which included a long run of 22 yards. Junior Sam Kleidosty’s rushing touchdown was the lone score of the night.

Senior quarterback Blake Poje completed 9-of-20 passes for 75 yards and two interceptions. Senior Dallas Bond caught three balls for 46 yards, while senior James Eaton also netted three receptions. Senior Branden Martin led the THS defense with 24 total tackles, including 10 solo stops.
