In the regional round of the postseason on Friday, Perry-Lecompton avenged its only loss of the 2020 season when the team needed it the most.

The Kaws were trailing 7-6 after three periods but scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to beat Hayden Catholic High School, 20-7, on the road Friday in the regional round of the Class 3A postseason. In some ways, it was the inverse of the regular-season meeting, when Hayden scored all 10 points late in the game of its 10-0 win.

Senior Thad Metcalfe scored two touchdowns for Perry-Lecompton on Friday, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. He also converted on a two-point conversion run. Running back Reichen Rush delivered a two-point conversion as well.

The Kaws, who were Class 3A runners-up a year ago, improved to 9-1 on their way to the sectional round of the Class 3A postseason. Hayden (No. 2 in Class 3A) ended its year with an 8-2 overall record.

Perry-Lecompton (No. 3 in Class 3A) will face Prairie View (8-1) next week.

Basehor-Linwood eliminates Eudora

After a late comeback victory in the first round of the postseason, Eudora’s football team couldn’t pull off the same trick against Basehor-Linwood on Friday night.

Basehor-Linwood made the plays down the stretch to earn a 19-12 win in the regional matchup. The Bobcats (7-3) broke a 12-12 deadlock by scoring a touchdown with a little over a minute left in the game.

Zeke Reazin was behind both of Eudora’s scores. Reazin threw a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give Eudora an early 6-0 advantage. He later scored on a 24-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to even things up at 12-all.

It was still a strong season for the Cardinals, who earned their first playoff win in five years by making a late comeback against Piper in the opening round of the Class 4A postseason.

Baldwin falls to Holton in playoffs

Baldwin’s football team ended up on the wrong end of a lopsided game in the second round of the Class 3A postseason.

The Bulldogs suffered a 49-8 loss at Holton on Friday. They ended their season with a 3-5 overall record, which included a 40-12 playoff win over Jefferson West. It marked the most wins by Baldwin in a single season since the team went 6-4 in 2017.

Holton (8-1) will face Frontenac (6-4) in its sectional matchup next week.

Lawrence High will face defending champs

Lawrence High’s football team will have a date with Derby in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

The Lions (9-0, No. 1 in Class 6A) had the week off after Dodge City forfeited its playoff matchup because of COVID-19 cases on its roster. The Derby Panthers (6-2, No. 3 in Class 6A) took care of business on their end with a 48-28 win over Gardner Edgerton on Friday.

Kickoff for the highly anticipated matchup between Derby and Lawrence is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at LHS. Derby has won four state titles in the last five years, which include back-to-back state crowns in 2018 and 2019.
