FSHS gymnastics claims runner-up at Sunflower League meet; LHS places 6th

Free State’s gymnastics team earned a runner-up finish on Saturday in its last meet before the state competition.

The Firebirds scored 105.425 points as a team at the Sunflower League meet at Shawnee Mission South. Olathe North won the meet with 106.900 points. Lawrence High’s gymnastics team placed sixth at the league meet with 97.650 points.

Katrina Farrow, who is the head coach for both the Lawrence and Free State teams, said the regional meet was a welcome tune-up before the state competition.

“We knew going in that this was our last meet opportunity to try a few last-minute changes before state,” Farrow said. “The girls stayed poised, got to work and pulled out an excellent meet.”

Free State senior Talia Gay continued her dominant season on Saturday, winning the title of all-around league champion with a score of 36.900 points. She finished first in beam with 9.550 points and was second in floor and bar and third in vault.

Kenzie Vaughn finished seventh in the all-around rankings for the Firebirds, and she posted the second-best score (9.200) in vault. Ellie Vickers came in ninth in bar and took 16th all-around. Tori Crockett, Ashley Mai, Chaney Finkeldei and Avery Qualseth also contributed to Free State’s runner-up finish.

Meanwhile, Paris Spotted Tail notched fourth in the all-around rankings to lead Lawrence High’s squad. She won both floor and vault with scores of 9.475 and 9.400, respectively. Beth Brandt claimed 19th all-around and finished in 13th place in floor. Caroline Dunlap, Sophia Zogry, Ivory Jones and Charlie Burghart also competed for the Lions in their final meet before state.

Now, the gymnasts will turn their attention to the state competition, which is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday in Newton.

“Going from not knowing if we were even going to have a season this year to competing in our second-to-last meet was a surreal feeling,” Farrow said. “We don’t take this opportunity lightly, as so many sports and seniors did not have a season in the spring. We are so grateful and beyond excited for state.”
