Wrestling roundup: 14 area wrestlers place at Bobcat Classic

A total of 14 area wrestlers did well enough to place in the Bobcat Classic on Saturday afternoon at Basehor-Linwood.

Tonganoxie had seven such wrestlers do so, which led to the highest finish among area squads in the 23-team event. The Chieftains scored 82.5 points as a team to place 14th on the overall standings. Lawrence High finished 21st with 32.5 points, while Eudora took 22nd with 31.5 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas and Underwood (Iowa) tied for first place with a score of 162 points. Mill Valley claimed third with a team score of 149.

Trey Medina, who was one of three LHS wrestlers to place in the event, finished third in the 152-pound weight class. In the third-place match, Medina won by fall over Kaden Jacobson of Basehor-Linwood. He won six of his seven matches on the day, which included five victories via fall.

Tonganoxie had a pair of wrestlers earn top-three finishes in their respective weight class. Grayson Sonntag secured a runner-up finish in the 120-pound weight class after losing via a decision in the first-place match. Sonntag won all five of his matches leading up to the title match. Gabe Bailey placed third in the 145-pound weight class with six wins on the day.

Bailey defeated Cael Lynch of Eudora in the third-place match via a 12-6 decision. Lynch’s fourth-place finish was the best mark of the day for the Cardinals, who finished above one team in the final standings.

In addition, Free State’s wrestling team had two wrestlers earn a podium finish at the Tournament of Champions at Newton this past weekend. Lou Fincher placed third in the 132-pound weight class, while Caleb Streeter placed fifth in the 138-pound weight class.
