Free State’s boys swim and dive team won its first meet of 2020 in convincing fashion.

The Firebirds placed first in 11 of their 12 events, scoring 431 points to win the quadrangular at Mission Trail Middle School on Wednesday. Lawrence High won the diving competition during its runner-up finish with a team score of 375 points. Shawnee Mission North placed third with 282 points, while Olathe West claimed fourth with 209.

A trio of FSHS swimmers won multiple events in the team’s first meet after the break. Junior Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Junior Reilley Moore took home first in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Benjamin Vorthmann placed first in the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Junior Brady Flynn and junior Finn VanDyke finished first in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, respectively. The Firebirds also won all three relays (200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay) en route to a team victory.

In the only event that FSHS didn’t finish first in, the diving competition, Lawrence High junior Salvador Good won with a score of 200.60 points. But the Lions finished as a runner-up in multiple events, including in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Both teams will compete in a meet at Shawnee Mission Northwest on Saturday.
