For the second year in a row, Tonganoxie’s wrestling team had two individuals secure state titles to end the season.

Sophomore Grayson Sonntag won the 120-pound weight class and senior Connor Searcy netted a state crown in the 220-pound weight class at the Class 4A state tournament at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. The Chieftains now have four state champions in program history, all of which have taken place in the last two years.

Free State senior Lou Fincher, who was the only other area wrestler to compete in the finals this weekend, finished as a runner-up in the 132-pound weight class at the Class 6A state tournament in Hartman Arena. In total, eight area wrestlers performed well enough to earn a podium finish.

But Searcy’s state title was a fitting end to what has been an illustrious career.

Searcy defeated Andale’s Cayden Winter by fall in the championship match to notch his second consecutive state title. Searcy won three of his four matches via pin en route to becoming the program’s first back-to-back champion.

After the 4-0 effort in the state tourney, Searcy ended his senior campaign with a 44-1 record.

Perhaps just as dominant was Sonntag’s path to his first-ever state title. The sophomore won his first two matches by tech fall before eventually netting a 10-6 decision over Chadwick Stahl of Mulvane in the championship match.

Sonntag, who notched third place in last year’s state tournament, ended the season with a 44-2 record. As a team, Tonganoxie placed fourth with a total score of 73 points. Chanute won the team title with 151 points.

Fincher, meanwhile, won all three of his matches by fall to get to the title bout on Saturday. After waiting all day for his match, Fincher dropped an 8-3 decision to Mill Valley’ Zach Keal. Fincher finished his final season with a 33-9 record. Freshman Nolan Bradley (23-13) placed fifth in the 106-pound weight class for the Firebirds.

At the same event, Lawrence High had a pair of wrestlers end up on the podium. Sophomore Kevin Honas, who finished with a 33-10 record, placed one spot higher than he did last year with a fourth-place finish in the 120-pound weight class. Freshman Jack Elsten claimed sixth in the 106-pound weight class.

Tonganoxie sophomore Gabriel Bailey pushed his way through the consolation bracket before notching third place in the 145-pound weight class. Bailey bested Trent Jones of Iola in the third-place match, ending the year with a 41-8 record.

Also finding the podium in Salina, Eudora junior Holden Andrews finished in fifth place in the 138-pound weight class. Andrews (29-8) pinned Frontenac’s Dawson Lapping in the fifth-place match.

Perry-Lecompton had a pair of wrestlers place in the Class 3A state wrestling tournament at Fort Hays State University. Junior Hayden Robb (22-6) finished fifth in the 220-pound weight class, while senior Grant Roush (33-7) claimed sixth in the 152-pound weight class.
