Five area wrestlers secured first-place finishes in what was an impressive weekend for regional boys wrestling.

A total of 28 area wrestlers earned a trip to their respective state wrestling tournament. Of those 28 wrestlers, 17 performed well enough to finish inside the top three of their respective weight class.

Free State’s Lou Fincher was one of five area wrestlers to climb to the top podium this past weekend. He placed first in the 132-pound weight class at the Class 6A regional meet at Washburn Rural. Fincher won by tech fall against Bowan Murray of Washburn Rural, improving his record to 30-8.

As a team, the Firebirds finished 10th out of 18 squads. Lawrence High came in 14th, led by a third-place finish from Kevin Honas in the 120-pound weight class. Washburn Rural won the event with a total score of 240 points.

But plenty of area standouts took home some significant hardware Saturday. Baldwin, Eudora and Tonganoxie were all in the same Class 4A regional meet at Louisburg. Perry-Lecompton competed in a 3A meet at Council Grove.

Tonganoxie’s tandem of Grayson Sonntag and Connor Searcy won the 120-pound weight class and the 220-pound weight class, respectively. The duo are now a combined 80-3. It was more than enough to help the Chieftains place fourth in the team standings. Eudora came in sixth, while Baldwin claimed eighth.

Eudora’s Cael Lynch locked up a title in the 145-pound weight class, moving his record to 27-8. Perry-Lecompton’s Grant Roush, who is now 31-4 this season, registered a first-place finish in the 152-pound weight class.

Baldwin had a pair of wrestlers reach the first-place match, but fell just short of a title at regionals. Nakos Benton and Toby Thomas both came in second place in the 106-pound weight class and the 220-pound weight class, respectively.

Gabriel Bailey of THS lost to Lynch in the championship match of the 145-pound weight group. Holden Andrews of Eudora was also a runner-up in the 138-pound weight class.

Along with Honas, a total of eight wrestlers won their respective third-place match. Nolan Bradley (Free State), Caleb Streeter (Free State), Grant Kelly (Tonganoxie), Dayton Fraser (Eudora), Larry Gulley (Eudora), Christopher Huslig (Eudora) and Hayden Robb (Perry-Lecompton) all came away with a bronze medal.

All state wrestling tournaments will take place next weekend, with Class 6A at Hartman Arena in Park City, Class 4A at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina and Class 3-2-1A at Fort Hays State University.
