Preps notebook: LHS wrestling sends 3 individuals to podium; Fincher places 4th for FSHS

Four city wrestlers found the podium this weekend at two different tournaments across the state.

Lawrence High had a trio of individuals earn a top-six finishes at the SEK Invitational at Chanute on Saturday. The Lions, who scored 43 points as a team, ultimately finished in a tie for 14th place out of 18 squads. Chanute won the whole event with 248.5 points as a team.

Kevin Honas led LHS with a runner-up finish in the 120-pound weight class. After receiving a bye in the first round, Honas won back-to-back matches before falling to Kael Pappan of Arkansas City in the championship match. Honas is now 22-6 on the season for the Lions.

Jack Elsten (106-pound weight class) and Trey Medina (152-pound weight class) also placed sixth in their respective division for LHS. Elsten is now 18-14 on the year, while Medina improved to 18-7 this season.

Free State only had one individual find the podium in the 62nd Rocky Welton Invitational at Garden City over the weekend. Lou Fincher placed fourth in the 132-pound weight class, recording four wins in his six matches. Fincher now has a 22-8 overall record.

The Firebirds finished 25th as a team with a total score of 48 points. Goddard scored 219.5 points en route to winning the 30-team event.

BHS girls basketball claims third

Baldwin’s girls basketball team finished third in the Wellsville tournament.

After falling to Wellsville in the semifinals, Baldwin bounced back to earn a 50-43 win over Anderson County in the third-place game Saturday. The Bulldogs (11-2, No. 4 in Class 4A) jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and never really looked back after that.

Riley Smith paced BHS with 13 points, but Josie Boyle joined her in double figures with a 10-point performance.

Baldwin will host Kansas City Piper at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

THS boys edge Jefferson West

The Tonganoxie boys basketball team earned a hard-fought 53-52 win Friday at Jefferson West. Despite a late surge by the hosts, THS (9-4, No. 7 in Class 4A) made enough plays down the stretch to pull out the road win.

Dallas Bond led the team in scoring with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds. Blake Poje recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Rylee Beach and Heston Robbins added 10 and 9 points, respectively.

The THS girls (3-10), meanwhile, suffered a 38-30 loss to Jefferson West in the first game of the doubleheader.

Tonganoxie will host Shawnee Heights on Tuesday.

Perry-Lecompton boys win tourney, PLHS girls finish as runner-up

Both Perry-Lecompton basketball teams competed in the championship game of their respective midseason tournaments this past week.

Earlier in the week, PLHS boys (9-3) earned a 65-43 win over Jefferson County North to win the Valley Falls tournament. Parker Stone and Blake Farmer were named to the all-tournament team after helping the Kaws capture the title.

On Saturday, Perry-Lecomton’s girls basketball team (7-3) suffered a 58-50 loss to Jefferson County North in championship game of the Jefferson County North tournament. Blaise Ball, Jenna Keller and Katy Hurd were all selected to the all-tournament team.

Eudora splits with Ottawa

Eudora came away with one win and one loss in a home basketball doubleheader against Ottawa.

The EHS girls cruised to a 49-33 victory over Ottawa in an important league clash. Eudora (11-1, No. 6 in Class 4A) has now won nine games in a row, a streak that began on Dec. 13. The team’s lone loss was a 36-26 defeat against Kansas City Piper, a team ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, EHS boys dropped a 53-45 decision to OHS. Eudora is now below .500 on the season with a 6-7 clip. The Cardinals have dropped five of their last seven games as well.

Eudora will travel to Baldwin on Friday.
