Coach of the year: Jon Orndorff, Tonganoxie

In a year with many quality soccer squads in the area, Orndorff’s Chieftains were one of two local programs (along with Baldwin) to win a regional title this fall. The Chieftains went 11-5 under Orndorff before losing to eventual state champion Bishop Miege in the Class 4A-1A quarterfinals.

Player of the year: Grady McCune, Baldwin

McCune is one of the most-decorated players in Baldwin’s history. In the category of assists, he set both the single-season mark (20) and the career record (56). He added 10 scores during his senior season, five of which were made with his right foot even though he is naturally a left-footed player.

2020 fall sports all-area photo: Mason Anderson, Lawrence High

Mason Anderson, Lawrence High — Lawrence’s offense ran through Anderson during his senior campaign. He was the team’s leading scorer this season with 16 goals and four assists, and he finished his career with 30 scores and 16 assists. Anderson was one of the most dangerous strikers in the league, and he was named to the All-Sunflower League first team.

Joon Chun, Free State — There was a lot to like about Chun’s game during his junior season. He played each midfield position, and he had a knack for delivering beautiful curved shots out of the box. Four of Chun’s nine goals this year came on such shots. Chun also had six assists this year.

Keaton Herron, Eudora — Opposing teams keyed on Herron more this year after his all-state selection a year ago, but the senior still finished with six goals and four assists during a 6-7-1 season. Herron was the team’s best attacker and best player all season and still found a way to produce even while getting more attention from his foes.

2020 fall sports all-area photo: Dylan Meier, Eudora

Dylan Meier, Eudora — Meier was a key player for the Cardinals on both ends of the field this season. He had four goals and two assists on offense, and he also provided lockdown defense from his left back position. The senior already had a good left foot, but he developed his right this year as well and was involved in all of Eudora’s set pieces.

Abel Mendoza, Tonganoxie — Dominant defense was the name of the game for Mendoza in his final season with THS. Mendoza rarely let players get by him, serving as a lockdown center back. Mendoza also added eight goals and four assists on the other end, and he was a first-team selection on the All-Frontier League squad.

Alec Murphy, Lawrence High — Murphy was one of the more versatile and skilled players in LHS’ history. The senior midfielder was known for his defensive play, but he also finished with five goals and two assists this year. Murphy ended up with 12 goals and nine assists in his four-year varsity career.

Beck Oldridge, Bishop Seabury — After his breakout freshman season in 2019, Oldridge posted a sophomore campaign that was even better. He had 13 goals and 11 assists in the 2020 season’s 15 matches. Oldridge often faced double coverage, but he had the ability to get past that pressure and finish with either foot. Oldridge scored 40% of his goals with his left foot in 2020.

Devin Prather, Baldwin — After a 1-3 start, the Bulldogs moved Prather to defender, and the difference was night and day: Baldwin’s defense only gave up 13 goals in 13 games after that change. Prather was a strong on-ball defender, and he also added three goals and four assists.

Grayson Sonntag, Tonganoxie — Sonntag was a staple of the Tonganoxie team and was often the best player on the field on any given night. He finished with 12 goals and eight assists during his junior season. Sonntag was clinical at finishing around the net, but he also did a great job of setting up his teammates. He made the All-Frontier League first team this fall.

Sarj Zeedan, Free State — The 16-year-old senior was really impressive this season, scoring 11 goals and four assists in his final year as a Firebird. Zeedan has aspirations of playing professional soccer, and his terrific ball-handling skills and strong vision really showed up throughout the season.

2020 fall sports all-area photo: Colby Zimmerman, Baldwin

Colby Zimmerman, Baldwin — In his four-year career, Zimmerman helped his team earn 42 wins. The midfielder finished with seven goals and four assists this year and showed off his strong passing skills, vision and energy on a regular basis. Zimmerman will play at Allen County Community College next year.
