Free State’s wrestling squad remains perfect on the season after two convincing wins during a double dual Wednesday night at Atchison County Community High School.
The Firebirds earned a 61-18 win over Atchison County and a 60-12 victory over Atchison High School on the night. With those two wins, Free State improves to 7-0 on the year under first-year coach Randy Streeter.
Because plenty of wrestlers got involved — along with some openings in the opposing lineup — only a handful of Free State wrestlers competed in and won both of their matches. Nolan Bradley did so in the 106-pound weight class, earning a tech fall against Atchison County and pinned his opponent in the dual against Atchison High.
Laython Biddle won both of his matches in the 160-pound weight class, including one by a tech fall. Matthew Marcum pinned both of his opponents in the 170-pound weight class, and Austin Burenheide did the same in the 182-pound weight class. Cole Rorick also won both his matches by fall in the 195-pound weight class.
Many other wrestlers earn victories for the Firebirds. Eric Streeter earned a tech fall victory and won another match by forfeit. Caleb Streeter, who was back in action after missing the previous meet, also won one match by fall and another by forfeit.
In girls wrestling, Madyson Gray (138-pound weight class) and Clare Benton (132-pound weight class) both won their respective matches against Atchison High.
FSHS will face a tougher test next time out, as it travels to Olathe West on Saturday for a quadrangular. One of Free State’s opponents will be Junction City, which is a team that ranks No. 7 in Class 6A.
The meet is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

Turner Corcoran slated to start for Nebraska
Former Free State standout Turner Corcoran is slated to make his first collegiate start for Nebraska this weekend, according to Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald.
Corcoran, who graduated from Free State a year ago, will start at left tackle for Nebraska’s road matchup against Rutgers. Corcoran will be one of three freshmen starting on the offensive line for the Cornhuskers.
Coming out of high school, Corcoran was considered a four-star offensive tackle on Rivals and the top-ranked recruit in Kansas in the Class of 2020. He was tabbed the Journal-World all-area football player of the year during his senior season in 2019.
“We think he’s going to be a great player,” Nebraska offensive coordinator Matt Lubick told the Omaha World-Herald. “When we recruited him, we thought the same thing. He’s kind of surpassed our expectations, and we’re excited.”
The matchup between Nebraska (2-5) and Rutgers (3-5) is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
