KSHSAA will allow parents at winter sports events beginning Thursday

Winter sports competitions will once again have spectators after a week of competing in empty venues.

Up to two parents or guardians per participant will be allowed to attend high school winter sports events starting on Thursday following a vote by the Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors on Tuesday.

The motion, which was proposed by Paola principal Jeff Hines, passed by a 54-24 margin during a virtual two-hour meeting that was streamed on YouTube and watched by over 1,000 people. Free State principal Myron Graber voted yes on the motion.

The new motion passed after KSHSAA originally voted in favor of no spectators being allowed at high school events from Dec. 1 through Jan. 28. That motion passed in the first meeting on No. 24 by a 50-26 margin.

Masks will be required for those in attendance. Schools can also still choose to enforce their own restrictions on fan attendance by the local board of education or health department.
