Former Kansas golfer Gary Woodland ran into some trouble Friday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, dropping on the leaderboard a day after his bogey-free opening round at the PGA Championship.

Woodland, who entered the day tied for 12th, got off to another promising start in the second round of golf’s second major of 2020, again avoiding bogeys completely on the first eight holes of the course.

However, a bogey on the par-4 ninth proved to be a turning point for the 2019 U.S. Open champion, on his hunt for a second career major.

Woodland regrouped after the turn with pars on the 10th and 11th only to give back three strokes total on the 12th and 13th.

An errant second shot into a bunker on No. 12 for Woodland, the former University of Kansas golfer and Topeka native, led to a bogey on the par-4 hole.

Then came a tee shot into the rough on No. 13, followed by an approach into the rough and four more strokes for a double-bogey.

Woodland birdied the 16th to drop back below even (-1) for the tournament, but finished with a 72 (+2) on Friday, a five-stroke difference from his opening round. He sat tied for 31st and seven strokes back of leader Haotong Li when the round completed.

Former KU All-American Ryan Vermeer, a two-time PGA Professionals Player of the Year, shot a 71 (+1) on Friday, putting him at plus-10 for the weekend and missing the cut.
