Ben Shryock wins varsity boys race for FSHS cross-country

Free State sophomore Ben Shryock secured a first-place finish Saturday morning at the Baldwin City Golf Course.

Shryock ran a time of 16:18.05 to place first in the varsity boys race, which featured multiple area athletes. Charles Johnson of FSHS finished third with a mark of 16:29.30, while Brock Cordova placed eighth with a time of 16:44.30.

As a team, Free State finished second with 48 total points. Mill Valley won the event with 46 points. Lawrence took 10th with a score of 229. Jack Ryan, a sophomore, led the Lions by finishing 11th overall with a time of 16:56.05.

On the girls side, Free State senior Erin Fagan led the way by claiming 10th with a time of 20:28.50. Allison Babbit (12th) and Maddie Day (17th) joined her in the top 20 with a time of 20:33.49 and 20:43.12, respectively.

FSHS finished third in the team standings with a score of 87, while Lawrence ended up seventh with 155. Baldwin (165) came in eighth. Mill Valley won the girls race with a score of 31.

LHS had two runners end up in the top 20 as well. Diana Messick finished 18th with a time of 20:44.18, while Lucy Hardy netted 19th with a mark of 20:45.48. Baldwin’s Riley Smith placed 13th with a mark of 20:35.07.
