KU volleyball suffers 1st loss of 2019 season

Kansas volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to South Carolina on Saturday in the second match of the three-day UCF Challenge in The Venue at UCF.

After a back-and-forth first set, the Jayhawks fought to a 27-25 victory following a kill by junior Sara Nielsen and a block by Nielsen and redshirt-freshman Kailea Carrier. KU then dropped the ensuing three sets (27-25, 25-18, 25-13) to South Carolina.

Ashley Smith and Zoe Hill did their best to keep the Jayhawks within striking distance of the Gamecocks. Smith finished with a team-high 14 kills and Hill added 13. Freshman Gracie Van Driel notched 11 kills on the night for her third match of the season in double digits.

Kansas will complete the UCF Challenge against tournament-host UCF at 3 p.m. Sunday in The Venue at UCF.
