Tonganoxie sent a statement to start the 2019 season.

In a battle between two strong Class 4A programs, Tonganoxie recorded a 49-28 win over Basehor-Linwood Friday night at THS. Last year, the Chieftains also faced Basehor-Linwood in their season opener, but suffered a 42-6 loss. After that, Tonganoxie rattled off wins against its next seven foes in the 2018 campaign.

THS exploded for 21 points in the second quarter and 21 more points in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Tonganoxie (1-0) will travel to Louisburg (No. 4 in Class 4A) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Perry-Lecompton 68, Royal Valley 0

Perry-Lecompton thrashed Royal Valley, 68-0, in the first game of the 2019 season.

Despite replacing plenty of production from a team that has won seven games in back-to-back years, the Kaws were in complete control at home Friday night. Thad Metcalfe ran for 129 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Quarterback Billy Welch went 11-for-12 and tossed four touchdown passes.

Perry-Lecompton (1-0) will travel to Holton at 7 p.m. Friday.

Ottawa 26, Baldwin 14

Despite taking an early lead, Baldwin suffered a 26-14 loss in David Bowen’s first game as the team’s head coach.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a touchdown run by quarterback Will Harvey, who also delivered the 2-point conversion. Harvey registered another short run to give Baldwin a 14-12 advantage at the intermission. Ottawa then scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to win its first game since 2017.

Baldwin (0-1) will travel to KC Piper at 7 p.m. Friday.

KC Piper 34, Eudora 7

Eudora never recovered from a 27-point deficit in a 34-7 home loss to KC Piper.

The lone score by the Cardinals came on a touchdown run by quarterback Zeke Reazin in the fourth quarter. The Pirates then responded with a score to finish off the lopsided affair in the season opener at EHS.

Eudora (0-1) will travel to Bonner Springs at 7 p.m. Friday.
