State golf recap: Seabury senior nets runner-up finish, 2 area teams claim 6th place

A pair of area girls golf teams and one individual earned a medal during this year’s state tournament, which featured a new two-day format at all levels.

Bishop Seabury’s Faith Hedges closed out an illustrious career with a runner-up finish in the Class 3-2-1A state golf tournament at Salina Municipal Golf Course. Hedges shot 77 on the first day and 76 on the second day en route to a second-place finish.

Hedges concluded her career with four top-9 finishes in as many years. Hedges won a state title as a freshman before netting ninth as a sophomore. Last season, Hedges landed a third-place finish as a junior.

Free State’s girls golf squad qualified for the second day and ultimately claimed sixth place at the Class 6A state golf tournament at Carey Park in Hutchinson. The Firebirds shot 761 as a team, including a 380 on the first day. Shawnee Mission East won the team title with a mark of 677.

Sophomore Addyson Meadows paced Free State with a 184 total score, which was good enough for 15th place on the individual leaderboard. Senior Kennedy Birk, a Friends University commit, shot 192 to place 32nd. Claire Covert, Claire Berquist, Kate Lawrence and Kari Rainbolt all finished inside the top 57 as well.

Sophomore Rylie Hayden was the only Lawrence High golfer to make it to the second day, as she claimed 37th with a total score of 195. LHS junior Emma Parsons shot a 120 on the first day in her first trip to the state golf tournament.

In Class 4A, all six Tonganoxie golfers finished in the top 50 to help the team notch sixth place. The Chieftains shot 821 as a team, while Buhler won the team title with a total score of 755 in the two-day tournament at Hesston Golf Course.
