Area football roundup: Tonganoxie improves to 7-0 with convincing win over Baldwin

It was a familiar story for Tonganoxie, as it cruised to a 55-0 victory Friday night at Baldwin in a battle between two area teams.

The Chieftains have now notched back-to-back shutouts, winning by a combined 96 points over the last two weeks. THS is now 7-0 on the year, while Baldwin falls to 0-7 with one game remaining in the regular season.

Cooper Cunningham anchored the rushing attack once again, piling up 214 yards and four scores on 23 carries. Blake Poje completed 11-of-14 passes for 166 yards and three passing touchdowns. Elijah Tyner scored twice on three receptions for 89 yards.

Tonganoxie hosts Ottawa next week, while Baldwin travels to Spring Hill.

Perry-Lecompton 21, Hayden 20

Perry-Lecompton needed late-game heroics to pull off a 21-20 overtime win Friday night over Hayden.

All 41 points in the game were netted after a scoreless first half by both teams. Grant Roush scored twice for the Kaws, recording a 23-yard touchdown pass from William Welch and a 7-yard pass from Thad Metcalfe. Hunter Hess also tallied a 16-yard touchdown pass from Metcalfe.

PLHS improved to 4-3 with the win.

Perry-Lecompton will travel to Bishop Ward at 7 p.m. Friday.

Paola 56, Eudora 3

Eudora was overmatched in a 56-3 road loss Friday night to Paola.

The Cardinals scored their lone points on a field goal in the second quarter. Paola scored 28 points in the first half before adding 21 more points in the third period. The performance came one week after EHS took down Ottawa for a 35-0 victory.

Eudora (2-5) will host Fort Scott at 7 p.m. Friday.

Cair Paravel 58, Veritas 38

Veritas dropped a 58-38 decision to Cair Paravel on senior night.

The Eagles were led by Andrew Windheuser, who racked up 210 yards and three scores on 40 carries in the loss. Adam Maurer added 75 yards and two touchdowns on 15 attempts for VHS.

Veritas (2-6) will travel to St. Mary’s Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
