‘It is our tradition’: Baldwin girls win another state title in 4×400-meter relay

Baldwin's 4x400-meter relay team after winning a state title for the third time in four years at Wichita State's Cessna Stadium Sunday afternoon on May 26, 2019.

Moments after winning a state title in the 4×400-meter relay, Baldwin’s quartet of Josephine Boyle, Natalie Beiter, Isabelle Harvey and Carly Lindenmeyer waved toward a collection of BHS fans in the crowd.

After Saturday’s postponement, a majority of Baldwin’s track team and fans went home. After all, the 4×400-meter relay was the only remaining event for the Bulldogs. The relay team found a new hotel, while group of supporters made the 160-mile trek back to Wichita Sunday morning.

The Bulldogs made sure the trip was worth it, claiming first in the 4A girls 4×400-meter relay with a season-best time of 4:06.84. It lifted Baldwin’s girls track team to a fourth-place finish overall as the squad’s lone event victory of the three-day weekend.

“We have a lot of chemistry,” Lindenmeyer said. “We all have a competitive mindset. It is not just that we rely on one person. We all want everyone to do our best.”

Closing out the state track meet with a first-place finish in the final race has become Baldwin’s annual tradition. BHS has now won a state title in the girls 4×400-meter relay four times in the last six years.

For Harvey, a freshman, it was an unique experience to climb atop the first-place podium at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.

“It is like nothing else, this is so cool,” Harvey said. “We have been working for this all season, it is cool to see it finally pay off.”

But for seniors like Lindemeyer and Beiter, climbing up to the top of the podium has become the expectation for the final relay. Lindenmeyer has now been the anchor on two state-winning 4×400-meter relay teams herself.

And that is because this event is a testament to Baldwin’s mental toughness as a team.

“At the end of every meet, most teams are checked out,” Lindenmeyer said. “But this is our favorite race.”

The latest relay win was perhaps the most impressive — at least in terms of mental toughness.

Baldwin’s foursome was forced off the track on two different occasions due to a weather delay. On Saturday, the meet was postponed just before the 4×400-meter relays with approaching storms nearing the area.

Four races before Baldwin took the track, the meet was again delayed due to lightning for 90 minutes. This coupled with the fact there was no preliminary races to work off of made Sunday’s performance all the more impressive.

“Third time was the charm,” Beiter said. “It just lengthened the fear and nervousness, but we got over it.”

It is not just the state meet either. Baldwin won the 4×400-meter relay only lost to one team all year. Leavenworth, which won the event in Class 6A girls, defeated Baldwin at the Kansas Relays earlier this season.

“It is our tradition, it why our coaches make a big deal to do our best,” Boyle said. “At the beginning of the last three years, our coach is always like ‘Nobody thinks we can do it again.’ But here we are.”

PLHS breaks meet record in runner-up finish

Any other year, Perry-Lecompton would have come away with a state title.

Perry-Lecompton’s 4×400-meter relay team of Shane Quinlan, Caidon Quinlan, Dalton Kellum and Colton Mallonee clocked a time of 3:23.11 in a runner-up finish during the second heat of the Class 3A boys competition. Scott Community won the event with a time of 3:22.72.

But PLHS still broke the meet record for the Class 3A boys, which was previously held by Cheney after a time of 3:23.31 in 1996. In the final team standings, Perry-Lecompton placed fifth.

Eudora’s Durr takes third

Garret Durr took third in Class 4A boys pole vault to lead the way for Eudora in the final day of the state track meet.

The Cardinals ran a time of 3:28.70 to win their heat in the boys 4×400-meter relay. Eudora’s relay squad of Daniel Grosdidier, Colby Lawhorn, Alaneon Ford and Bobby Lounsbury ended up a with a seventh-place finish in the event. Eudora finished 17th as a team in Class 4A boys, while the girls placed 13th.
