Baseball, softball state tournament brackets released for area teams

Four area baseball and softball teams will be in action in the final week of the season, two of which will compete right here in Lawrence.

Both Free State baseball and softball squads are the No. 2 seed in their respective 6A state tournament. Both teams are in the state tournament for the second year in row, as FSHS softball claim the program’s first state title last spring.

On the softball side, the Firebirds (20-2) will face seventh-seeded Olathe Northwest (17-5) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Arrocha Ballpark. With a win, Free State would face the winner of No. 3 Mill Valley (20-2) and No. 6 Olathe North (17-5) on Friday. Washburn Rural is the top seed in the softball bracket with a perfect 21-0 record.

Meanwhile, Free State baseball (19-3) will take on No. 7 Olathe East (15-7) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Hoglund Ballpark. With a win, FSHS would take on the winner of No. 3 Washburn Rural (17-5) and No. 6 Blue Valley Northwest (16-6) on Friday. Campus is the top seed in the baseball bracket with a 20-2 record.

Eudora softball is the No. 4 seed in the Class 4A state tournament after claiming its first regional title since 2016. EHS is slated to take on No. 5 Rose Hill (16-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bill Burke Complex in Salina. Andale/Garden Plain (21-1) is the top seed in the bracket.

Tonganoxie baseball is the No. 6 seed in the Class 4A state tournament, which will take place at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina. THS (12-9), which notched its second consecutive state berth, will take on No. 3 Nickerson (16-2) at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. Fort Scott (21-1) is the top baseball in team in Class 4A.
