A balanced effort led the Lawrence High girls track and field team to a Sunflower League title Friday night at the Shawnee Mission South District Stadium.

The Lions, who are the defending class 6A state champions, won three different relay races along with three individual events to score 152 points. Gardner-Edgerton, the runner-up of the event, scored just 100.

Evann Seratte, Hannah Stewart, Jayden Wilson and Sophie DeWitt won the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:50.69. Bella Kirkwood, Asjah Harris, Amaya Harris and Ashley Wildeman secured first in the 4×100 with a time of 48.36. The 4×400 quartet of Ozi Ajekwu, Asjah Harris, Seratte and Stewart closed things out with a winning time of 4:03.59.

Amaya Harris won the javelin competition for the Lions with a launch of 128-11. Stewart placed first in both the 1,600-meter run and 800-meter run with a time of 5:11.85 and 2:20.64, respectively.

Haley Hippe claimed the only first-place finish for the Free State girls team, which ended up in 10th. Hippe won the discus competition with a toss of 107-01.

On the boys side, Tyler Bowden won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.11 and Malachi Starr placed first in the 400-meter run with a mark of 49.90 for the Firebirds. FSHS placed fifth in the boys competition, while LHS took 10th.

Both teams will compete in the regional meet at 3 p.m. Friday at Free State.
