LHS baseball begins 2019 campaign with 9-0 win over Wichita Northwest

A pair of Lawrence High pitchers combined to throw a shutout in a 9-0 win over Wichita Northwest Saturday afternoon at LHS.

Preston Harris tossed five innings of one-hit ball, and Jake Miller followed suit by giving up one knock over the next two frames. Harris fanned four batters and walked one, while Miller recorded one strikeout.

Harris was also one of two Lawrence batters to post a multihit effort. Harris and Neal each registered two hits in the win. Garrett Romero was credited with two RBIs for the Lions. Ethan Rorabaugh, Ryan Lauts, Caleb Mondi and Neal all notched an RBI, as well.

Lawrence will take on Southmoore at 4 p.m. Friday at Deer Creek High School.

Firebirds start season off with two losses

Free State began its season earlier than expected, playing two games in Missouri this weekend.

The Firebirds, who recently added these two games on the schedule, started the 2019 campaign off with a 3-2 loss to Ozark Friday afternoon before being handed a 6-2 defeat by Kickapoo on Saturday.

Jake Baker and Cam Karlin netted the only two hits for the Firebirds against Ozark. David Stuart allowed two runs off four hits over three innings during his first start. Jake Kallenberger, Colter Maldonado, Jaxson Webb and Karlin each recorded a hit against Kickapoo. Karlin also gave up three runs off six hits across three frames.

Free State will play host to Sioux Falls Washington at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
