LJWorld.com Area Basketball Roundup

A pair of area teams will play on the final day of the basketball season, though neither will be competing for a state title.

Both the Baldwin girls basketball team and Perry-Lecompton boys basketball team suffered defeats in the semifinals of their respective state tournaments. Both squads are slated to compete in the third-place game Saturday afternoon.

Baldwin was unable to defend its crown, falling to Bishop Miege by a 74-44 margin Friday afternoon at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. The Bulldogs, who won the state title in Class 4A-II last year, always knew it would be tough to defend their title with all of Class 4A being combined this season.

It was an even battle in the first period, as Bishop Miege (23-0) clinged to an 18-16 advantage after the opening period. BHS (20-2) managed just 7 points in the second period, though, and Bishop Miege eventually broke the game open with a 24-point effort in the third quarter.

Junior Anna Burnett was the lone Bulldog to score double figures, finishing with 11 points. Senior Macey Frost finished with 9 points, while senior Kate Ogle chipped in 7 points. Bishop Miege had four players finish in double figures.

The third-place game is slated for 12 p.m. Saturday, while the championship will take place at 4 p.m.

Perry-Lecompton’s win streak ends at 19

It was a matter of time before Perry-Lecompton’s remarkable streak came to an end.

PLHS was handed a 62-53 defeat by Beloit in the semifinals of the Class 3A state tournament Friday afternoon at Hutchinson Community College. It ended a 19-game win streak for the Kaws, who previously hadn’t lost since Dec. 11.

Colton Mallonee was the only other PLHS player to score in double figures, pouring in 10 points. Colton Ketron led the team in assists with four.
