Preps notebook: Free State wrestling claims sixth at Bobcat Classic

A total of 30 teams competed in the Basehor-Linwood tournament this past weekend.

Free State’s wrestling team proved it can hang with the best, placing sixth as a team with a score of 113 points. FSHS actually tied with Andale, though both programs finished behind Bonner Springs (232), St. Thomas Aquinas (167.5), Mill Valley (140.5), Abilene (130.5) and Junction City (115) in the tournament.

Lawrence High, meanwhile, scored a total of 62 points to claim 22nd out of 30 teams.

The Firebirds (No. 9 in Class 6A) had four wrestlers place at the Bobcat Classic. Joey Eddis continued his strong season, netting first in the 170-pound weight class after winning by fall against Dakota Whiteley, of Abilene, in the championship match.

Lou Fincher (126 class) and Devin Beers (182 class) each placed third for FSHS. Elijah Jacobs registered fifth place after winning by tech fall in the fifth-place match of the 145-pound weight class.

For the Lions, Logan Farrell and Kevin Honas each netted podium finishes. Farrell finished as a runner-up in the 113-pound weight class after falling to Cassius Vanderpool, of Bonner Springs, in the championship match. Honas won by a major decision in the fifth-place match of the 106-pound weight class.

Both teams will have duals at home this upcoming week. Free State will welcome Shawnee Mission Northwest at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while Lawrence will play host to Olathe West at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Bowling teams begin 2019 campaign

Both city bowling teams kicked off the new year with one of the largest meets of the season.

At the Free State Invitational, the Lawrence High girls bowling team placed sixth with a total score of 1,994. FSHS placed seventh with a mark of 1,976. On the boys side, LHS finished eighth out of 16 teams with a 2,284. The Firebirds scored 2,153 as a team to end up in 10th place.

In the girls competition, a total of four city bowlers ended up in the top-25 on the individual leaderboard. Emilie Rodman, of Lawrence, claimed the highest finish with a series score of 572 to take ninth place.

A trio of Free State bowlers did well enough to end up on the leaderboard. Sydney Jordan placed 16th with a mark of 525. Lexie Lockwood logged 22nd with a 501, while Raegan Finkeldei took 24th with a score of 487.

On the boys side, Lawrence’s Jayden Cress posted the best mark with a series score of 637 to claim eighth place. Lorenzo Dan of LHS registered 18th place with a 584, while Bayn Schrader of FSHS rolled a 574 to place 23rd.
