Local volleyball athletes to participate in tryouts for national team

Ten volleyball student-athletes from Lawrence will participate in the 2019 U.S. Women’s National Team open tryouts, which are set to take place this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Six current Kansas volleyball student athletes are each set to head to the U.S. Olympic Training Center for the tryouts, which will be held March 1-3. Free State senior Rachel Hickman and Rose Hill senior Gracie Van Driel, a pair of KU commits, are just two of 18 with four years of college eligibility.

A pair of standouts from Haskell Indian Nations University, Alliyah Richards and Sophia Honahni will represent the Indians as just two of three NAIA players attending the tryout.

The group will be competing for a spot on the USWNT and/or the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program. There are 215 student-athletes from 88 colleges/universities that are expected to participate.

Rachel Langs, Van Driel, and Hickman are all eligible to be selected for the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team that will compete in the 2019 Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) Women’s U20 World Championship.
