Tonganoxie senior Korbin Riedel made history Saturday afternoon, only for THS junior Connor Searcy to join him two hours later.

Both Riedel and Searcy became the first wrestlers in program history to net state titles during the Class 4A state tournament at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

“It meant a lot to me,” Riedel said. “I was in the finals last year and ended up losing 8-4, so I had a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to get revenge this year, and it ended up happening.”

Riedel defeated Cael Johnson of Burlington during the championship match of the 152-pound weight class, which wrapped up a perfect 42-0 season for Riedel. Searcy (28-2) then won by a 3-1 decision against Garron Champoux of Marysville in the championship match of the 195-pound weight class.

Freshman Grayson Sonntag placed third in the 106-pound weight class, as the Chieftains finished seventh as a team with 76 points. Marysville notched a team title with 112.5 points.

No wrestler from Eudora or Perry-Lecompton placed at the state meet.
