Several area basketball teams to host opening round of sub-state

The Kansas State High School Activities Association released sub-state brackets at every level Wednesday afternoon. Many area teams will get the opportunity to host the first round next week.

All but one city team will get the opportunity to play at home in the opening round. Lawrence High’s boy basketball team earned a No. 4 seed in the 6A West bracket, and will face No. 13 Wichita South at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. With a win, LHS would face the winner of No. 5 Garden City and No. 12 Liberal at home in the sub-state championship at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1.

Free State’s boys basketball team was listed as the No. 7 seed in the 6A West bracket. FSHS will face No. 10 Junction City at 7 p.m. Feb. 27. Topeka High, the No. 2 seed, is the top team in Free State’s sub-state bracket.

On the girls side, LHS earned the No. 7 seed in its region. The Lions will play host to Wichita Southeast at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. No. 2 Derby, the defending 6A state champ, is the top team in that sub-state bracket. Free State, the No. 9 seed, will travel to No. 8 Garden City at 6 p.m. Feb. 28.

Meanwhile, the Bishop Seabury boys basketball team is the No. 2 seed in its sub-state bracket. Bishop Seabury will face No. 7 Olathe-Heritage Christian Academy at 7 p.m. Monday. The Seahawks have to win three games to return to the 2A state tournament.

Perry-Lecompton’s boys basketball team, which closed the regular season on a 15-game win streak, is the top seed in its sub-state bracket and could host all three games. PLHS will face West Franklin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Baldwin’s girls basketball team, which secured a state title last year, is the No. 3 seed in Class 4A. BHS will play host to No. 14 Atchison at 7 p.m. Feb. 28, and then would play the winner of No. 6 Parsons/No. 11 Louisburg at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 2. Eudora, the No. 5 seed in Class 4A girls, has a first-round meeting with No. 12 Iola at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at EHS. No. 4 Labette County is the top seed in Eudora’s sub-state bracket.

Eudora boys basketball, which is also the No. 5 seed, will face No. 12 Tonganoxie at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 for the first round of sub-state.

Tonganoxie’s girls basketball team, which is the No. 15 seed, will host the play-in game with No. 18 Kindley at 6 p.m. Tuesday. With a win, THS would face No. 2 Piper at 7 p.m. Feb. 28. Baldwin’s boys basketball team will also be in the play-in game in the 4A East bracket as the 18th seed. Baldwin will travel to No. 15 Paola at 7 p.m. Monday.

Perry-Lecompton’s girls basketball team is the No. 6 seed in its 3A sub-state bracket. PLHS will travel to Royal Valley at 7 p.m. Monday.
