A total of nine city wrestlers are headed to the 6A state tournament.

Free State is sending six athletes to the final meet, while Lawrence High will have three competitors after a strong showing at the regional meet in Garden City this past weekend. The Firebirds placed seventh as a team with 120.5 points, and the Lions scored 46 points to claim 13th.

Derby won the entire event with 229.5 points, which was 9 points more than runner-up Manhattan. Washburn Rural scored 210 to take third as a team. Garden City (201.5) and Haysville-Campus (159) rounded out the top-five.

For the Firebirds, junior Lou Fincher and senior Elijah Jacobs secured regional titles to lead the way. Fincher, who is 31-5 this season, won in the ultimate tiebreaker over Erik Dominguez, of Garden City, during the championship match of the 126-pound weight class. Jacobs (23-4) defeated Cole Wells, of Washburn Rural by fall in the 145-pound weight class.

Caleb Streeter (132), Joey Eddis (170) and Devin Beers (182) each placed fourth in their respective weight class for FSHS. Trey Shanks (113) also notched seventh, punching his ticket to the state tournament.

LHS senior E.J. Jewsome placed third in the 285-pound weight class, earning his first trip to the state meet. Kevin Honas placed fourth in the 106-pound weight class, while Logan Farrell took sixth in the 133-pound weight class. All three wrestlers now have at least 22 wins on the season.

The 6A state wrestling meet will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Area wrestlers punch tickets to state

Plenty of area wrestlers earned state berths, as well, this past weekend.

Eudora is sending six wrestlers after finishing second as a team at the Paola Regional. Cael Lynch (30-9) took home a regional championship in the 138-pound weight class, while Hagan Andrews (28-9) did the same in the 132-pound weight class. Dayton Fraser was a runner-up in the 106-pound weight class.

Holden Andrews (145) claimed third, while Joe Faircloth (113) and Tristen Brecheisen (220) each registered fourth in their respective weight classes.

Tonganoxie had four wrestlers qualify at the Paola Regional, including three athletes who netted regional titles. Senior Korbin Riedel placed first in the 152-pound weight class to maintain his perfect 38-0 record ahead of the 4A state tournament. It marks the third regional title for Riedel in his career.

THS freshman Grayson Sonntag defeated Fraser in the championship match of the 106-pound weight class. Connor Searcy clinched first in the 195-pound weight class, downing Ottawa senior Brett Ferguson in the title match. Jesse Collier placed fourth in the 160-pound weight class.

In addition, four Perry-Lecompton wrestlers posted podium finishes at the same regional meet. Thad Metcalfe fell to Lynch in the championship match of the 138-pound weight group. Hayden Robb, who competes in the 220 class, also lost in the championship match. Collin Rossillon (285) and Grant Roush (152) each placed fourth in their weight group.

The 4A state meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Veritas 64, Omaha Lightning 49

Veritas used a 22-point second quarter to record a 64-49 win over Omaha Lightning Saturday.

The Eagles led by just 1 point after the opening period, increasing their lead to double digits by the intermission. Tuckery Flory continued his recent scoring dominance, as he finished with 34 points on 16-of-24 shooting. Trey Huslig was the only other player in double figures, scoring 13 points in the win.
