Preps notebook: City swim teams compete in 18-team meet at Olathe Invitational

It was an important week for both city swim teams.

The boys swim squads of Free State and Lawrence High had two tough tests in as many meets this week. In Wednesday’s quadrangular in Manhattan, FSHS placed third with 303.5 points and the Lions claimed fourth with 289 points. MHS won the event with 375 points.

All three of those programs were back in action in the Olathe Invitational on Friday. Free State finished in eighth out of 18 teams, scoring 136 points. Lawrence placed 13th with 90 points. Olathe East won the whole event with a score of 347.

Still, the Firebirds and Lions had their moments during a week that could prepare them for the postseason.

Free State’s Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck netted both his wins in the quadrangular at MHS. He finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.18, while winning the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:05.29. It was the only two wins by either city team during the week.

Sirimongkhon-Dyck notched a runner-up finish in both races in the Olathe Invitational on Friday. Brady Flynn earned a pair of top-five finishes in Olathe as well, notching fourth in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle. Elliott Ahlvers placed second in the diving competition.

Lawrence’s Maxwell Cowardin claimed fifth in the 500 freestyle, which marked the team’s only top-five finish in the 18-team event. In Manhattan, Tyler Jones took home a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and the 100 fly.

Both teams will return to action in January.

Cardinals claim 4th, LHS wrestling places 7th

A pair of area wrestling squads were in action this past weekend.

In its home tournament, Eudora placed fourth as a team with 111 points. Lansing won the Eudora Tournament of Champions with a score of 210. Lawrence High, meanwhile, placed seventh with 83.5 points.

The Cardinals had a pair of players finish in the top-two of their respective weight class. Cael Lynch won all four of his matches, improving to 7-0 on the year. Lynch won by a 6-4 decision over Lawrence’s Trey Medina in the first-place match of the 145-pound weight class.

Holden Andrews fell in the championship match of the 138-pound weight class, dropping a 7-2 decision to Wamego’s Adler Pierson. Andrews is now 7-1 on the year after going 3-1 in the event at EHS.

The Lions had three different athletes make it to the first-place match of their respective weight class. Kevin Honas won the 120-pound weight class, ending things by claiming a 9-4 decision over Daylen Borisouth of KC Schlagle. Honas is now 9-2 so far this season.

Jack Elsten, who is 7-2 this year, was a runner-up in the 106-pound weight class. He dropped a 7-6 decision to Olathe North’s Jason Parris in the final match. Medina finished in second place in the 145-pound weight class, moving to 7-3 on the season.

Both teams will square off in dual at 7 p.m. Friday at EHS.

Veritas basketball earns narrow win

The Veritas boys basketball team hung on for a 44-42 victory over St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

After being tied at 7 following the first quarter, VHS claimed a 20-10 lead at the intermission. The Eagles gave up 19 points in the fourth quarter, which ultimately led to the score being closer in the end during their home win.

Will Rau was the only player in double figures for Veritas, scoring 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting. He also recorded nine rebounds and five assists in the win. Brennan Clements and Will Bartkoski each added 8 points.

Veritas travels to Manhattan CHIEF on Monday.
