KU volleyball defeats UMKC in season opener

It was a strong showing to start the 2019 season.

On two different occasions, Kansas volleyball had to answer UMKC during a five-set road victory in the season opener. The Jayhawks dropped the first set by a 25-13 margin before bouncing back with a 25-23 win in the second set. UMKC claimed a 25-18 win in the third set, but KU evened things back up with a 25-16 win in the fourth set.

Zoe Hill capped the back-and-forth match off by delivering the final point of KU’s 15-12 win in the fifth and final set. It was a good start in the first of five road matches that Kansas will have to begin the fall season before ultimately playing in its new arena on Sept. 12.

Hill was one of three KU players to finish with double-digit kills in the win, notching 11 on a .261 hitting percentage. Gracie Van Driel paced the attack with 14 kills, while Rachel Langs notched 10. Sara Nielsen was credited with 46 assists in the win. Allie Nelson tallied a team-high 24 digs.

Kansas (1-0) will travel to Omaha at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
