Preps notebook: City wrestlers shine in Leavenworth tournament

Both Free State and Lawrence High were in action this weekend at the 30th annual Leavenworth Challenger, held Saturday at Leavenworth High School.

Free State’s wrestling team placed fourth with a score of 139.5, while Lawrence’s squad came in 10th out of 12 teams with a mark of 31.5 points. Liberty (Mo.) won the tournament with a total score of 322.0. Washburn Rural and Raymore Peculiar (Mo.) finished with 242.0 and 226.5 points, respectively.

The Firebirds had four wrestlers finish second in their respective weight class. Trey Shanks (113), Lou Fincher (126), Elijah Jacobs (145) and Joey Eddis (170) each took second individually in the tournament. The quartet went a combined 18-4 on the day.

Meanwhile, Justin Miller led the way for the Lions with a 2-3 record to place fourth in the 170-pound weight class. Kevin Honas was the only other LHS wrestler to win multiple matches, posting a 2-2 clip in the 106-pound weight class.

Lawrence travels to Eudora at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. FSHS will welcome Basehor-Linwood for a dual on Dec. 12.

Lion records interception against Big 12 foe

Former LHS standout Kieran Severa made an impressive play over the weekend.

The Drake linebacker intercepted Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt in the second half, giving his team a chance to take the lead against No. 24 ISU. It was the lone interception by the Bulldogs, who dropped a 27-24 decision.

Severa was credited with one solo tackle and four assists in the season finale.

Venters nets collegiate honor

Emily Venters accomplished a monumental feat this season.

The former Free State runner, who now competes for Boise State, competed in the NCAA national cross-country championship race in Madison, Wis. Venters finished 39th overall, which was good enough to earn an All-America honor. It marks the first time she has netted such an honor.

At Free State, Venters won five state titles, including first-place finishes in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run at the 2017 6A state track meet. She was a runner-up in both events as a junior in 2016.
