The Lawrence Rotary Club has a tradition of having its guest speakers sign children's books that are then donated to the library at Cordley Elementary School. Ian Archer's Eagle Scout Project mapped the coordinates of Civil War and African American Civil War graves within two cemeteries. With the help of Garmin, a surveyor, Sons of the Union Civil War and his crew, they found four missing graves that seem to always get overlooked at Memorial Day. This fall, the first phase was completed; the data phase was the next step for Archer.

There were more than 20 high schools with 100-plus teams from Kansas and Missouri participating. The team Lawrence High School #8 was awarded First Place Overall Champion. Crown Automotive purchased a wooden bench from student-artist Maya Frazier through the Summer Benchmark program at Van Go. The memorial bench is in memory of Crown's former general manager, Dale Backs, who died of pancreatic cancer. The dedication was held in the month of November in recognition of November being Pancreatic Cancer Month. On the left is Miles Schnaer, owner of Crown Automotive. In the middle is Maya Frazier, the artist of the bench. On the right is Eliza Nichols, marketing director of Van Go.

Sandy Dixon, general manager of Plastikon Inc., encouraged the development of a hydraulics course for her employees in conjunction with leading area manufacturing companies. The Dwayne Peaslee Technical Training Center’s executive director, Marvin Hunt, worked with Dixon to develop the course. Training on the fundamentals of hydraulics took place at the Plastikon plant in late November. Dalton Dempsey, a third grader at the Baldwin Elementary Intermediate Center, is shown with the medals he won at the Cross Country Coaches National Youth Championships held in Nashville in November. Captain Daniel Brown retired from the Kansas Highway Patrol in December, after serving the state and citizens of Kansas for more than 31 years. Brown began his career with the Kansas Highway Patrol on June 18, 1983, as a member of KHP Class #19. He is originally from Baldwin City, and is a graduate of Lawrence High. He attended Kansas University and Barton County Community College.

The Kiwanis Club of Lawrence recently celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Kiwanis. Kiwanis began on January 21, 1915 in Detroit. The local Lawrence club was founded in 1920. Today, Kiwanis International has a presence in over 80 countries. Kiwanis and its family of clubs is nearly 600,000 members strong. Annually, members raise more than $100 million, and report over 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children Lawrence Kiwanis meets weekly at the Lawrence Country Club at noon.

Janet Satz, a Lawrence mixed media artist, is one of 12 artists selected from North America and Europe awarded a one month Escape to Create residency for this February in Seaside, Fla. The artists are selected from an international pool of applicants, following a peer review selection process. Satz will take a four-week Escape to Create residency in February 2015 at Seaside. The artists are also to be involved with the community and schools. Artists are also required to perform community service. Satz said she is currently working on two community projects for Seaside. One is to provide several workshops in collage in a school. Another is a presentation on her project and her art she will present to colleagues and the community.

The Eighth Annual Martin Luther King Community Breakfast was co-sponsored by the Jayhawk Breakfast Rotary Club and the Lawrence Ecumenical Fellowship. The speaker was Kansas University Professor Kevin Willmott (center). His topic was "Dr. King and Creative Maladjustment." Willmott is an associate professor in the film and media studies department. He is known for his work focusing on black issues, including writing and directing "Ninth Street," "CSA: The Confederate States of America," and "Bunker Hill." In addition, Willmott is responsible for the film "Jayhawkers," which is about legendary coach Phog Allen and his famous recruit, Wilt Chamberlain. Jayhawk Rotarian Bernie Kish (left) and Rev. Eudora Boy Scout Troop 64 spent Jan. 16-18 at the 38th annual Trapper's Rendezvous hosted by the Wichita White Buffalo District of the Quivira Boy Scout Council. The event was held at the Harvey County Park West which is a few miles west of Newton and had over 6,000 people in attendance. Those attending were Scoutmaster Glenn Jackson, Damon Bradley, Andrew Briery, Nick Aguilar, Jerry Trober, Logan Trober, Travis Smith and Chris Smith. Troop 64 is sponsored by the Eudora Lions Club and meets at 7 p.m. Mondays at the Eudora Assembly of God Church.

Michael Uhler, sixth grader at Corpus Christi Catholic School, met family friend and 2015 inductee in the NFL Football Hall of Fame, Mick Tingelhoff. Tingelhoff was an All American at Nebraska with Michael's grandfather Noel Martin who is from Clay Center. Michael met Tingelhoff at at recent Nebraska game.
