Letter to the editor: Work across the political aisle

To the editor:

It is not often that I have voted for a third party or an independent candidate. But Scott Morgan’s candidacy for secretary of state is different.

Scott’s motive for running is not just to win, but more importantly, to make a statement about the sad state of our democracy and to demonstrate what must be done to save it.

Scott believes we need to revive the art of political compromise if the government is to do what needs to be accomplished for its citizens and restore their faith in our system and elected representatives. He believes we need to elect candidates who will take off their party labels and “work across the aisles” to find common ground and solve our most pressing problems. He knows that nothing will be accomplished if our congressmen continue to view every issue as a “win or lose” proposition for their ideology and view bipartisan cooperation as political weakness.

I have known Scott since he was a student senator at KU and was impressed then as I am now with his primary political goal of making our government systems work for all of us. He is fair-minded, intelligent, honest and committed to public service. If elected, he won’t compromise those personal characteristics, but he will demonstrate that those traits and the willingness to work in a bipartisan environment can restore the much needed faith and trust in our democratic government. Scott’s mission is of critical importance. That is why I am voting for him.
