Letter to the editor: Questions for Moran

To the Editor:

Open letter to Sen. Jerry Moran:

I have some clarifying questions about your statement regarding events in Minneapolis.

“I am deeply troubled by the shootings in Minneapolis involving federal agents.”

You mean the killings by federal agents, correct?

“Our Constitution provides citizens protection from the government. We have a right to free speech, to peaceably assemble and to bear arms. We also expect government to protect us from lawless behavior.”

Such as that exhibited by the CBP agents, right? When they took a citizen’s lawful concealed weapon without a warrant, detained him without charge, and then shot him point blank 10 times while he lay on the ground?

“Enforcing immigration laws that remove dangerous criminals from our streets and neighborhoods makes us safer and increases our national security.”

Then why are CBP and ICE rounding up all these people with no criminal records?

“This can only be accomplished if local, state and federal officials work together to uphold the law.”

Then why won’t DHS let the local and state police — or the FBI — access the evidence?

“Law enforcement must reflect our nation’s values, and citizens should obey the law.”

And law enforcement should obey the law, correct?

“This tragic circumstance should be investigated to the fullest extent to ensure transparency and accountability.”

Do you think that will happen if the agency that committed the killings has sole power to investigate them?

I look forward to your answers. Thank you for your consideration.

Joe Harrington,

Lawrence
