Letter to the editor: Let people learn
To the editor:
Totally agree with last Saturday’s column, “College is meant to challenge students.” Alexandra Middlewood is a professor who points out that college’s “central mission is to expand knowledge, foster critical thinking and encourage engagement with complexity.” It is a ridiculous presumption that a society can limit thinking to only the preferred ideas of the society. As she says, “a democratic society requires citizens capable of reasoning through complex ideas.” We don’t need others telling us what to say or think. “DEI courses do not require students to adopt a particular political ideology.” I would add that if they did, students would try out the banned ideas just because they were banned! Let people learn!
