Letter to the editor: A preventable death
To the editor:
Nov. 10 is my nephew’s birthday. He won’t be celebrating, however, because a drunk driver killed him almost two years ago. He left behind a young widow and three children under the age of 6. The drunk driver, now — finally — in prison for murder, had multiple previous DUIs in more than one state. The justice system failed to keep that person off the roads.
We share the sorrow of Elsa McGrain’s family and know its lingering sadness and devastation.
We also share their likely outrage in knowing that this death was preventable. When will prosecutors and judges finally do their job and put drunk drivers in prison after they have shown utter contempt for others’ safety and before they kill someone?
In sorrow,
John Rodgers,
Lawrence
