Letter to the editor: A Cold War reminder

To the editor:

I highly recommend the viewing of “House of Dynamite” now streaming on Netflix. It paints a stark reminder that the Cold War and its threat of nuclear destruction appears to have restarted. Case in point: World’s leader in terms of nuclear weapons stockpiled has been involved in a ground invasion of its neighbor for three years, a wannabe nuclear power (North Korea) continues its development of a nuclear weapons program and another recently had a key component of a nuclear program (Iran) struck by aerial bombardment. Added to that is the recent public discussion by the current administration of possibly resuming nuclear testing, an act the U.S. hasn’t undertaken since the early 1990s.

Meanwhile, while the administration worries about such pivotal topics as beards for the military, whether Tylenol causes autism, or to construct a massive ballroom at the White House, our adversaries, skilled at playing the long game, must be observing with bemusement at our nation’s domestic agenda of on-again/off-again tariffs, a shutdown that seems to have no end, and a chief executive who thinks it the high point of hilarity to post memes that denigrate his opponents and treat the body politic like hapless idiots. They are not doing any of these things but rather are building out their navy (China), supporting international terrorism (Iran), and continuing to wage war in a manner that is a throwback to the bloody trenches of World War I (Russia).
