Letter to the editor: Parks & Rec pulls a fast one on us
To the editor:
Parks and Wrecks has hatched a plot in secret, then sprung it on the public just days before the election for city commissioners. As Church Lady said on “Saturday Might Live,” “How conveeeeeeenient!” Yet again the wealthier west side will have access to Rock Chalk park, while folks on the east side will be deprived of the so-called Community Building. No basketball, no emergency shelter in cold weather or during tornadoes, nada, bupkis.
Somehow the city found $50 million for a consolidated site for equipment and workers but cannot find enough to keep the Community Building open. As one friend said, “The city is putting a paywall around services we have already paid taxes for.” Here’s a suggestion: Fire those who concocted this plan, then put the savings into real community services — you know, the most good for the most people.
Despite sliding this one past in the last minute, making sure the issue is not part of the commission elections, the issue is not closed. If we need to cut administrators or even recall some commissioners, this will be addressed. The current Parks and Wrecks administration wants to Johnson Countify us. I love my brothers and sisters in Johnson County and I am happy they can easily afford fees for city services, but we are not Johnson County. We are Lawrence.
Don Dorsey,
Lawrence
