Letter to the editor: The time is now
To the editor:
Since World War II America has been the leader of the free world. The USA could be counted on for trade, goodwill and defense of allies. Under Joe Biden, Ukraine counted on us to stand up to Vladimir Putin. Then Donald Trump and JD Vance had hissy fits, and our support is highly questionable. Many countries are watching to see how reliable America will be.
Slapping tariffs on Canada, Mexico and others around the world isn’t good for our economy or our standing as a leader of democracy. Our country is now a bully. Trump is pulling punches and making decisions with Putin without Ukraine at the table. Thousands of lives were lost and Ukraine’s support from America has faded. Will America stay in NATO?
Our democracy was immediately put at risk when Trump took office, appointed Elon Musk his henchman, added Project 2025 “yes men” and an unqualified Cabinet to wreak havoc at home and abroad. Trump has no guardrails, but resistance is building a backlash. Our Judicial system ruled Trump and Musk do not have carte blanche authority to slash government programs established by Congress.
Congress must step up and put brakes on Trump, fire Musk and restore funding to agencies our citizens rely on every day. Congress is saying nothing as Musk slashes and burns the pillars of our society. Shame on us if we let that happen. Call and email Congress today and every day and demand they stop this madness. Our democracy is at risk if we do not speak up now!
