Letter to the editor: The fox guarding our hen house

To the editor:

“The Fox Wife” by Yangsze Choo is a fascinating read that I got from The Raven Book Store. It’s the story of three foxes, two dogs and a vixen, who assume human form, live by their wits and beguile humans. These tales are set in Mongolia, Russia and Japan, where many believe in such spirits. The vixen, Snow, thinks that foxes should not go too far with their charms and influence because overplaying their hand can lead the humans to “… suspect they’ve been fooled by foxes. That’s what leads to all those tales of disillusionment and discovering yourself naked, covered with fleas and eating rotting meat in an abandoned grave. Of course that exact scenario seldom happens, but it’s a good metaphor for how people feel when they discover they’ve been duped.”

Since twice electing a fox to guard our national hen house, some swing voters are having remorse over their red votes. I’m not sure the core of MAGA voters will ever come to feel duped, but if some should come to that realization, I imagine Ms. Choo’s metaphor will be close to the bone.
